With countless anti-aging ingredients on the market and endless advice online, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
According to Viky Villareal, Restore’s Esthetic Education Manager, skincare should be simple and effective. Here are the essentials for an anti-aging skincare routine that will help keep your skin looking youthful and fresh.
Skincare Products for Youthful Skin
Signs of aging, such as wrinkles, dark spots and redness can be addressed with the right skincare routine and consistency. Here are the products we recommend for youthful, glowing skin.
Gentle Cleanser
Wash your face at least once a day with a mild, gentle cleanser. Some people may benefit from washing their face in the morning and the evening before bed. Avoid harsh exfoliants that can damage your skin’s moisture barrier.
Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals and stimulate collagen production. Look for a concentrated serum for maximum effect, and store it in an opaque container to prevent degradation from light exposure.
Retinol
Retinol, also known as Vitamin A, encourages skin cell turnover and collagen production. Start with over-the-counter retinol products, applying a thin layer of moisturizer beforehand if you have sensitive skin. For some clients, a prescription retinol may be a better choice.
Moisturizer
Hydrated skin is healthy skin. Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type, and look for additional anti-aging ingredients like ceramides and exfoliating acids.
Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
Sunscreen is your best defense against aging. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days or when indoors.
Simple Anti-Aging Routine
While there is no one-size-fits-all routine, here is a good baseline for general anti-aging skincare.
Morning Routine:
- Wash with a gentle cleanser
- Apply Vitamin C serum
- Apply moisturizer
- Apply sunscreen (if not included in your moisturizer)
Evening Routine:
- Wash with a gentle cleanser
- Apply retinol
- Apply moisturizer
When to Start
It’s never too early or too late to start an anti-aging skincare routine. While starting younger is beneficial, it’s never too late to see improvements in your skin.
Give It Time
When adding new products to your routine, take it slow. Give your skin at least three months to adjust and show results. Don’t be alarmed if your skin purges initially—it’s a sign that the products are working.
Other Skincare Tips
Remember, in addition to your skincare routine, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to support youthful skin.
- Eat a balanced diet
- Stay hydrated
- Get enough sleep
- Manage stress
- Wash your pillowcases often
