Whether you know it or not, everyone has experienced inflammation at some point.
It’s your body’s natural response to things like germs and injury, and it helps to promote recovery. But while this natural inflammatory response can help you heal when you’re sick or injured, it can hurt your health when your body continues to send these signals when there’s no present danger.
RestoreLabs—our team of medical science experts dedicated to evidence-led decision-making to help improve your health, wellness and longevity—recently conducted a study. The goal was to determine the effects of Whole Body Cryotherapy on systemic inflammation in healthy adults. The goal was to determine if Cryotherapy can help, even if the participants are "healthy."
What is Inflammation?
There are two types of inflammation, acute and chronic. Acute inflammation occurs in response to an injury or illness, and symptoms such as pain, redness, swelling and heat generally only last a few days.
Chronic inflammation, however, results in symptoms lasting for months and years and can result in many serious conditions, such as aging-related diseases, cardiovascular disease, allergies, cancer, metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity and a shortened lifespan. Chronic inflammatory diseases are believed to be “the most significant cause of death in the world.”1
What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?
Before breaking down the findings of the RestoreLabs study, it’s important to understand how Whole Body Cryotherapy works. A Cryotherapy session is usually two to three minutes and involves safely exposing your body to sub-zero temperatures inside a special chamber. Those freezing temperatures spark a natural fight-or-flight response in your body that causes blood vessels to constrict and move blood away from your extremities and toward your core. This is a natural response to protect your organs.
While this occurs, oxygen levels and certain proteins that work to decrease swelling increase, so when you leave the chamber and are exposed to normal temperatures, all of that oxygen-rich blood moves through the body. The benefits of this therapy may include a reduction in oxidative stress and muscle soreness and pain, improved energy, mood, sleep and more.2
The Study & the Results
While studies have found numerous benefits of Cryotherapy, researchers have noted a lack of long-term research on inflammation and the potential of Cryotherapy as a treatment tool, particularly for healthy individuals.
The study measured inflammation (hsCRP) and metabolic biomarkers in 15 healthy adults who underwent three minutes of cold exposure at -110 ℃ using Cryotherapy over a nine-month period.
What they found confirmed their hypothesis that Cryotherapy can provide beneficial impacts even for those who do not suffer from chronic inflammatory symptoms and diseases. The more frequent use of Cryotherapy, starting at six sessions per month, was linked to lower inflammation and potential improvements in blood sugar. While those benefits may not be fully felt for the first three weeks, researchers concluded that Cryotherapy "has been demonstrated to be potentially beneficial to the general population as an anti-inflammatory treatment” and that “the anti-inflammatory effects show lasting durability for impact on future chronic inflammation.”
“Our study adds to the growing evidence that Whole Body Cryotherapy can be a powerful tool for managing systemic inflammation—even in healthy individuals,” said Dr. Rachele Pojednic, Restore’s Director of Scientific Research & Education. “We found that at least six Cryotherapy sessions significantly lowered hsCRP, a key marker of inflammation, with effects lasting up to nine months. We also observed promising trends in fasting glucose regulation.
“While Cryotherapy is often associated with athletic recovery, our findings suggest it may have broader benefits for long-term metabolic health,” she added. “By tracking key biomarkers over time, we’re gaining a clearer picture of how cold therapy can support overall wellness before chronic disease develops.”
Reduce Inflammation. Increase Results.
As this study demonstrates, Whole Body Cryotherapy can provide science-backed benefits for those seeking to improve their well-being. Whether or not you have symptoms of inflammation, ask your Restore Hyper Wellness Rep about your options and if Cryotherapy may be right for you.
